I found a copy of Focus on the Family's Radio Theater dramatization of The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis in my car the other day. I thought it would be a good story to listen to during this Lenten Season so I put in the first disc and entered into an entertaining examination of conscience. C.S. Lewis prefaces this book with a message,
"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils; one is to disbelieve in their existence, the other, is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. Listeners are advised to remember that the devil is a liar not everything that Screwtape says should be assumed to be true even from his own angle"
What I love about The Screwtape Letters is that it gives a view of temptation from the devil's side. The little ways that Wormwood is taught to lead his "patient" closer to "their father," the devil. It gives us a new look at what we might consider small sins but as Screwtape says, it does not matter the size of the sin but the result of that sin leading to separation from God. During this Lent if you have time I would highly suggest that you get a copy of either the book or the dramatization and use it as part of your Lenten journey to see in what subtle ways the devil might be tempting us.
Happy Lent, Nina
